Week 1-December 9, 1916
I have just recieved this journal for my 16th birthday. I've never really had a journal before so this is brand new to me. Well for starters I am Clara Feticini. I live in Sicily, Italy. i recieved some news from my father today that war has broken out between Germany and France. The war started because of both being so proud of their countries. This is nationalism which is, a strong devotion to one's country. Such as, Germany was proud of their new military power and industrial leadership. France wanted to gain back it's position as Europe's leading power. They wanted to get back the territories Alsace and Lorraine from Germany. Enough of this war talk for tonight. I fear father might have to go and fight in the war. Well see you later.

Sorry I didn't write yesterday. My fear has came true. Our nation Italy has signed a secret Treaty with Britain and France. The treaty stated that Italy would be given the Tyrol and Dalmatian coasts after the war. We changed sides basically from Austria Hungary and Germany. It must be hard being the prime minister of Italy to make that decision. Poor Vittorio Orlando. He knows what he is doing though for our nation. Boys around town are full of glee for the war. They think the war will be over by Christmas I sure hope so. I miss father alrady even though he left yesterday. I hope all is well. That's all for tonight. Good Night.

I have some horrible news father has went to war. I don't know how it happened. It just happend so fast. Yesterday he registered now todya he is gone. It was sad. News of the great archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria- Hungary was assasinated by a terriost group called the Black hand. Alongside his wife. After that Austria declared war on Serbia. That's when all the alliances joined together. Russia, France and Britain. And of course us, Italy with Germany and Austria- Hungary. Fro some reason I think Germany and France, the war isn't about them, but i do think the assination of the archduke was the main cause. I don't know. I just wish father was here.

Week 2- December 19th, 1916

Father wrote a letter telling us how he was and what it's like to be fighting in war. He says they train everyday until a battle. The weather is often very cold and dark. He talked about the weapons the soldiers use. Such as the machine guns, grenades, cannons. Father says that most of the Italians are planning to leave for home. While Russia is devising a plan to go to Russia, and France to fight. To me it makes no sense but that's what they want to do. They said the war should be over by this Christmas but I highly doubt it. Who knows. But I do wish the war would end soon.

There are propaganda posters up everywhere in our town. The propaganda poster I picked above seems to symbolize us trying to protect our country. You see, there is a picture of Italy and our flag over it. Maybe I should send one to father to show him that some people are showing support to the troops. The propaganda poster shows techniques such as recruitment of soldiers, and patriotic appeals. I remember seeing another poster above the recruiting office. Maybe it is also trying to get young men to fight in the war. It must have persuaded father to do so or he wouldn't have left. I hope father is alright mentally and physically. Why should poor men fight in a war. No one quite knows why people join war. To be brave or fight for their country that's what I think. well it is getting late and I must be off to bed. Write to you later. Bye

Good news! Russia has left the war. That means only France and Britain are left. The United States (U.S.) remained isolated from the war but now they are entering the war.Due to the unrestricted warfare. Germany sank a ocean liner by the name of the Lucitania thinking that the ship was carrying weapons and supplies to the allies. But instead it was women and children, plus other people. I feel so sorry for them. I couldn't imagine what there families are going through. Poor things.

I fear Italy could be tired of the war and come home. Plus the events that are taking place might not have any good chances for Italy to win. I mean where are the soldiers going to get supplies at. If the U.S. isn't going to let us.It is mostly Germany's fault all these things are happening. I don't want our nation, Italy to be destroyed from all this. All for now I must go. See you later.

Father wrote us a letter wishing us all a happy christmas. It's just not the same. He said something glorious happened on Christmas. He said that all of the soldiers including the enemies celebrated together. When I heard this I was astounded. They actually paused the fighting just to celebrate Christmas. Why couldn't they stop the war then and just let all the soldiers home. But I guess its just not ready to quit because I bet right after Christmas the whole fighting began again. I had a good Christmas but it just wasn't the same. I must go. Bye

Sorry I haven't written in awhile. Italy is returning home father says! The allies drew up a treaty called the Treaty of Versailles. Where basically the Germans were forced to take the blame for the war and pay for war damage. Father says that the prime minister is mad because we didn't get the coasts Tyrol and Dalmatian as promised. But I don't care the war is over and finally father gets to come home. Which to me is the happiest thing on Earth.

The End
